A Patent Agent is a PatentScientist who has also passed the Indian Patent Agent exam. He/She is a technology expert on one hand and Patent law expert at the other. A Patent Agent holds the license to prosecute a Patent Application in the Indian Patent Office. Indian Patent Office receives nearly 50,000 to 1,00,000 Patent Applications in a year currently and the number is growing exponentially as the business in India is growing at one of the fastest rates in the world.

How to become a Certified Patent Agent?

A qualified Science and Engineering graduate, who is a Citizen of India & has completed the age of 21 years, and has obtained a degree in science, engineering or technology is eligible for Patent Agent qualifying examination conducted by Govt. of India.

The detailed guidelines are provided under u/s 126 of The Patents Act, 1970, for becoming Patent Agents in India. The qualifying exam takes place once a year in the month of May at designated centers such as Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi and Nagpur.
